Today starts a picture/day venture! I'm kicking off this new venture with a series of images taken on Lake Superior in winter of raven wing impressions in the snow. A day or two before finding these images, my brother and I spotted ravens circling over the frozen lake beyond the ice banks which are formed when storms whip up waves that are frozen into a series of ice banks.
On a bright sunny day we decided to walk out to see what they were attracted to. As we approached we saw a deer carcass on the ice below. Coyote tracks surrounded the carcass as well as many wing impressions in the snow. In several places it appeared that the ravens had been challenging each other for scraps.
In this image, the wing tips grazed the snow. If this were the only image would you know what created the impression in the snow?
